With the purpose of treatment is used such parts of burdock as burdock root, seeds, and burdock leaves. Burdock medicinal properties are used in diabetes mellitus, kidney and gall stones, in skin diseases, gastritis, gastric ulcer, chronic constipation, hemorrhoids, edema, gout.
Burdock roots contain organic acids, tannins and bitter substances, inulin polysaccharide - up to 45%, essential oils - up to 0.17%, fatty oil, mineral salts and vitamins. The leaves are harvested in July - August, dried in a draft, in a ventilated room. Burdock leaves contain mucus, carotene, vitamin C, have antibacterial activity. Infusion of burdock leaves is used for disorders of the stomach, with fever.
Seeds contain 25 - 30% oil, burdock fruit infusion, seeds are used for constipation. As an external remedy, burdock root preparations are used for baldness, depriving, inflammation of the sebaceous glands, leaf infusion - for eczema, ulcers and purulent wounds. Pounded fresh leaves are applied to wounds, hard tumors and gouty nodes. Fresh juice from burdock leaves treat wounds and skin cancer. In medical nutrition salads from young leaves and peeled petioles are used. Young shoots and leaves are put in borsch, burdock root is used instead of potatoes in soups, baked or roasted. Roasted ground burdock root is used as an additive in the preparation of coffee. Burdock root oil is also used in perfumery. Bees love burdock flowers. The burdock plant is a wonderful honey plant. From one hectare of thickets bees collect up to 600 kg of honey.
